Why use a professional tree consultant?
A professional tree consultant will have undergone extensive specialised training to equip them with the knowledge, skills and experience required to identify, assess, diagnose and provide expert care for trees. The most appropriate qualification to hold is LANTRA’s Professional Tree Inspection certificate. In addition, a professional tree consultant will adhere to industry standards and best practices, such as the Arboricultural Association’s Code of Conduct. Dr Stuart Glen, Principal Consultant at Callophrys Tree Consultancy, holds the Professional Tree Inspection certificate and is a member of the Arboricultural Association.

What is a Homebuyer’s Tree Report?
A Homebuyer’s Tree Report is a comprehensive assessment of the trees on or near a property to identify potential risks, such as damage to property or infrastructure, interference with utilities or health and safety issues. If you’re purchasing a property with trees nearby, a Homebuyer’s Tree Report ensures that any risks or liabilities related to those trees, such as subsidence or overhanging branches, are identified before the purchase. Increasingly, more and more mortgage lenders and insurance providers insist on a Homebuyer’s Tree Report.
How often should I inspect the trees I’m responsible for?
Tree inspections are an essential part of maintaining tree health, ensuring public safety, and preventing damage to property. The frequency of inspections largely depends on factors like the tree’s age, species, location, potential targets and previous history of problems. Young and healthy trees in a low-risk environment may only need inspections every three to five years, while mature trees or those in high-risk areas (e.g., near buildings, roads, footpaths or playgrounds) may require an annual inspection. Inspections are especially important after major weather events, such as storms, heavy snow, or strong winds, as these conditions can weaken a tree’s structure, even if damage isn’t immediately visible. Engaging an arboricultural consultant for routine inspections ensures any issues are identified early.
