Exactly, how did I arrive at the name Callophrys Tree Consultancy?

Family, friends and colleagues were quick to offer advice,

  • “You should capitalise on your standing in the industry. You’re well known. Your company name should include your name.”
  • “Choose a company name that shows you have a doctorate. What about The Tree Doctor?
  • “You should choose a company name that begins with the letter A so that you are near the beginning of any alphabetical lists.”
  • “Most importantly choose a name that people will stick in people’s minds. Don’t choose a company name that people can’t say, or can’t spell.”

Whoops!

The ‘Callophrys’ element – a word I frequently misspell myself – harks back to my entomological background. Callophrys rubi is the scientific name of the green hairstreak – Britain’s only green butterfly. A somewhat unique creature, and whilst I don’t have any grandiose claims that Callophrys Tree Consultancy will be a unique consultancy service, I certainly hope that it will stand out from the crowd.

The butterfly can be found on heathland, moorland and woodland clearings throughout the UK. The male butterflies are highly territorial and during spring and early summer will aggressively defend favourite perching sites whilst waiting for a female to flutter past.

The butterfly never rests with its wings open [the upperside of the wings are brown], but that didn’t stop me from taking liberty with the logo for Callophrys Tree Consultancy. I would like to say a massive thank you to Lucy of LBD Creative for creating Callophrys Tree Consultancy’s distinctive brand identity.

So, remember the name, Callophrys Tree Consultancy – pronounced KA-loh-friss. The chosen company name alludes to the fact that along with the range of standard tree consultancy services, the company has an inherent expertise in insect pests and diseases of trees, and entomological surveys are very much part of the suite of services on offer.
